Public Safety

Public safety ensures the well-being of residents. It's not just about enforcement, although we nearly doubled the number of Transit Peace Officers and re-established the Police Funding Formula. These actions have helped to address the symptoms of social disorder, but we need to work with the Province to address the roots causes such as housing, mental health, gaps in the justice system and addiction treatment.

Public Safety also means making our communities vibrant and more welcoming so that neighbours can connect and feel part of the community. The greatest number of constituent concerns Jo-Anne has addressed as Councillor is the speeding traffic on our roads, especially in residential areas.

Vison Zero Street Labs are an effective way to implement traffic calming measures and help change driver behaviour.  Funding for this strategy has been impacted over the years due to the provincial limitations placed on Automated Traffic Enforcement. And as a result, this has put further strain on police resources to expand their traffic enforcement efforts.
