Investing in Core Services

Edmontonians expect that the basic core services are delivered. Meeting those expectations has become challenging as our city grows. With our city welcoming a population the size of Red Deer over the past two years, the costs of providing those services have increased.

Over this term on Council, we have re-instated some of the funding in areas like public transit, snow removal and turf maintenance - funding that was reduced in prior years to keep property tax increase near zero. We have seen the benefits of this spending with transit service, including On Demand, expanding in Ward Sspomitapi.

Enhanced policy direction such as Substantial Completion and Complete Streets Design Standards will ensure new developments better meet the recreational and safety needs of residents at the outset of development. Consideration of the ongoing operational costs of such development will ensure taxpayers are not unnecessarily burdened by these costs.
